Peter G. Somerville, B.Sc., LL.B.
Peter Somerville was born and raised in the Village of Long Branch, which is now part of the GTA. He attended and
graduated from James S. Bell Public School and New Toronto Secondary School. He graduated from the University of Toronto (Victoria University) in 1971 with a B.Sc., and from
Osgoode Hall Law School in 1974 with an LL.B.
Peter articled with the firm of Sutherland & Hagarty in Kitchener. He was admitted to practice at the Bar of Her
Majesty's Courts in Ontario by the Benchers of the Law Society of Upper Canada, in Convocation, and sworn in and enrolled as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Ontario, in 1976.
Peter returned to Kitchener to practice, where he joined the firm with which he had articled, as an associate lawyer. He became a partner in the firm in 1982, and practised
continuously with that firm, and its successor firms, until 1999.
Over that period of time, his practice was generally devoted to corporate, commercial and
real estate areas of the law, including such related, and sometimes unrelated, areas as mergers, acquisitions and divestitures; bank and other lender securitization; security
enforcement; income tax (including corporate reorganizations, amalgamations, capital gains crystallizations and rollovers); insolvency; estates (wills, powers of attorney, estate
planning and estate administration); agri-business (farm products marketing boards, tribunals and quota related issues); shareholders' agreements; and commercial and residential real estate and development.
For the past four years, Peter has been employed as corporate counsel by a Kitchener based, private, real estate development and property management company, where he
was primarily involved in commercial leasing, planning and development of commercial and residential real estate, and the acquisition and divestiture of commercial and residential real estate assets.
Peter joined Sorbara Law in May, 2006, and has been seconded by the firm to one of its valued clients, Rowan Williams Davies & Irwin Inc. (Consulting Engineers and Scientists) in
Guelph, where he will perform duties as corporate counsel.
Peter is married to Debbie (who coincidentally, is a professional engineer, which should
make life interesting) with two children (Scott and Laura), a dog and a horse (the horse being the main reason Peter has gone back into private practice). In his spare time, Peter
enjoys a wide variety of sporting activities, including hockey, skiing, golf, tennis, bicycling and swimming.
