Susan Liu, LL.B., LL.M. (Hons.)

Susan Liu was called to the Bar of China in 1997 and was a partner lawyer in Shandong Tianhua Law Firm and senior counsel in Beijing Zhongjing Law Firm. She obtained her LL.B from Qingdao University School of Law in 1997 and her Masters Degree in International Law from the Law School of Ocean University of China in 2006. In all, Susan practiced law in China for more than 11 years. She also gained experience practicing law in the United States, where she obtained an Honours LL.M in International and Comparative Law in 2007 from Indiana University School of Law. Susan was called to the Bar of Ontario in January 2012 after completion of her lawyer’s licensing exams and her articles with SorbaraLaw.

While practicing law in China and the United States, Susan acted for various international clients, including those from the mainland of the Peoples Republic of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Canada, the United States, Europe, Singapore, Japan, Korea, and Russia, etc. She developed extensive experience in international trade law working in the areas of state-to-state negotiations, trade policy, and economic and trade sanctions. Susan has worked in all areas of Chinese domestic law and she has practical experience and proven expertise in assisting companies conducting business in China.

Since joining SorbaraLaw in July 2008, Susan has proven to be an invaluable resource for our clients who are conducting business in China or elsewhere within North or South East Asia, and our clients who have business or regulatory concerns in the Chinese commercial market or with any Chinese government agency. Susan has also assisted our clients seeking to expand their businesses through accessing the opportunities presented by the Chinese marketplace. She has developed successful strategies for commencing operations in China, including opening representative offices and leasing space in China, and papering joint venture relationships within China. She has credible connections with various Chinese regulatory agencies and existing financial organizations within China, which greatly assist in establishing a successful business in China. Susan’s advice and guidance help remove uncertainty and mitigate the attendant risks of doing business in China.

Susan is also part of our immigration team assisting our corporate clients with temporary and permanent immigration applications and other complex immigration issues that can arise for companies doing business internationally or participating in mergers and mining resources acquisitions.
