Jennifer is an experienced Lawyer, Collaborative Professional and Mediator at Sorbara Law, one of the largest and most respected regional law firms in Ontario. She is an established and trusted advisor to those caught in the often emotional, confusing, and stressful experience of a family breakdown.
Jennifer is well aware of the financial and emotional burden that litigation can cause and devotes her practice to resolving matters outside of court, whether it be through negotiation, collaborative family law or mediation. She is experienced and knowledgeable in all areas of family law, including custody, access, child support, spousal support and property issues as well as having extensive experience in preparing separation agreements, cohabitation agreements and marriage contracts.
Resolving matters through Collaborative Family Law is about avoiding the cost and time demanded by the court system and concentrating on co-operation, respect, open communication, and full disclosure. Many of Jennifer’s client’s choose a collaborative process because it is client directed and family focussed. In collaborative law, all available effort and resources are directed towards developing creative solutions that meet everyone’s needs.
Jennifer is a proponent of mediation and as a lawyer has guided many clients through the mediation process ensuring their interests are respected and factored into a final agreement. Further, Jennifer is herself an experienced mediator and able to assist couples as a neutral third party, in negotiating a mutually acceptable agreement. Jennifer’s experience in mediation began while in law school, when she volunteered at the University of Windsor Mediation Service after having completed the Mediation Clinic Course and the Alternative Dispute Resolution Course. Since law school, Jennifer has completed Transformative Mediation training through Conrad Grebel College at the University of Waterloo and Community Justice Initiatives Jennifer has also completed a Certificate in Family Mediation at York University. Jennifer is an Associate Member of the Ontario Association for Family Mediation.
Jennifer is active in her community through her volunteer work. She is a past member of the Board of Directors for Marillac Place, a shelter for mothers and their babies. As well, Jennifer is a regular participant in community fundraisers. Jennifer Black is a Co-Chair of Collaborative Practice of Waterloo Region also known as Best4all. In addition, Jennifer is a member of Speed River Collaborative.
