Summer and Separation: A Collaborative Approach
Summer & Separation
By Jennifer Black
Summer is a time for family, travel, and outdoor fun, however for families experiencing separation or divorce, it can also bring added challenges. Adjusting parenting schedules, planning vacations, and managing transitions between households often require extra communication and flexibility.
Collaborative Practice offers a respectful, solution-focused way to navigate these changes. Unlike the court process, collaborative focuses on problem solving rather than conflict. Each spouse works with a collaboratively trained lawyer and neutral professionals such as financial or family professionals. Together, the team helps families:
- Identify what is important to them and their priorities
- Communicate and address concerns respectfully
- Create practical, customized solutions that are acceptable to everyone
In a collaborative process families maintain control over important decisions rather than having outcomes imposed by a court.
With children out of school and the new academic year ahead, summer can be an ideal time to establish clear plans for:
- Parenting schedules
- Extracurricular activities
- Educational expenses
- Communication expectations
Taking the time to plan now can create greater stability for everyone in the months ahead.
Collaborative Practice helps families move forward with dignity while supporting children’s well-being by helping parents reduce conflict and encourage cooperation.
We encourage families navigating separation to reflect on whether a collaborative approach could help them move forward with greater dignity, openness, and mutual respect.
